Local organizations sponsoring major events that are open to the public are invited to submit calendar items and photos. We also encourage local organizations to use this calendar to schedule their events and avoid conflicts with other events. Please contact us by email. This calendar is administered by the Vista Chamber of Commerce and is endorsed by the City of Vista as the official Community Calendar. Events, times and locations are subject to change; we recommend that you contact the organizers to confirm details.

July 15 (Wednesday) Opening Night of 42nd Street@ The Moonlight Amphitheatre. The grand curtain of Moonlight Amphitheatre’s new stage house is set to rise on  “42nd Street,” the ultimate Broadway musical which opens Moonlight Stage Productions’ 2009 Summer Season of musicals under the stars on July 15.

42nd Street
is the legendary 1930’s story of a young actress, Peggy Sawyer, who arrives in New York to audition for a Broadway show. She gets catapulted to stardom by amazing circumstances in the unforgettable tap-dancing extravaganza that is a testament to the “Lullaby of Broadway.”

Performances of the show run July 15 through August 1, Wednesdays through Sundays at 8:00 p.m.; with no performance on July 29, at the Amphitheatre, located in Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista.Tickets are $22 to $44 and are on sale at the VisTix Ticket Office, located at 600 Eucalyptus Avenue in Vista. July 17
(Friday) Starting at 7 pm. (open mike readings at 8 pm).The Village Idiots Literary Society presents their monthly literature reading, featuring poet, Tomas Lucero. This is an inspiring presentation with open mike time for all to share their writing. There will be plenty of time to meet and greet.  Admission is free.
Location: Gallery 204, 204 Main Street in Historic Vista.
Mr. Lucero's presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. followed by an open mike reading at 8:00 p.m.  The mike will be open to all who wish to read their original poetry, prose, or anything written by another artist.  Admission is free.

July 18 (Saturday) July General Meeting located at the Park Terrace Café Senior Center from 2-4pm.

July 25 (Saturday)
Arcadia Place Swap Meet – 1080 Arcadia Ave., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. admission is FREE. Tons of vendors. Free refreshments offered by Arcadia Place. Johnny Jumper for the kids! Reserve a place to sell your own items at no cost. Table rentals are $5.00 if needed. Setup starts at 8 a.m. Space is limited – RSVP Required. 8,000 invitations have been sent out to surrounding area. Call 760-945-5555 for details.

July 26 (Sunday) Annual Bluegrass & Ice Cream Social
The 6th annual Bluegrass & Ice Cream Social will feature music from the Virtual Strangers Band from 4-6 p.m. at the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, 640 Alta Vista Drive, Vista. Tickets are $10 and include one ice cream sundae or root beer float. Tickets are available through the VisTix Ticket Office at (760) 724-2110, online at vistixonline.com, or at the Adobe Gift Shop. July 31st -August 2 (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)
20th Annual Vista Rod Run & BBQ Contest:
The Vista Village Business Association announces the 20th Annual Vista Rod Run and a Smokin' Q Classic. The Classic is a California State Championship Barbeque Competition sanctioned by the Kansas City barbeque Society. The BBQ Competition will begin on Friday, July 31 with judging and awards on Saturday, August 1st. The public will also have an opportunity to participate in the "Taste of Barbeque" to sample the championship recipes.

On Sunday, August 2nd from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can experience one of the largest car shows in the San Diego area as well as one of Vista's biggest community events. Car lovers will be drooling over more than 300 of the finest hot rods around. This year a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Girls Inc. of San Diego. Music will be provided on a stage at the corner of Main Street and Michigan Avenue.

The Vista Rod Run has been an annual event in the City of Vista for 19 years. It's main goal is to attract people to the revitalized downtown area and to provide funds for a local charity, which rotates on a yearly basis. August 5 (Wednesday) Angels Depot 3rd Annual “Angels Day at the Races”.  It’s a day at the Races – Del Mar Thoroughbred Club – Lunch in the Turf Club. Included is a Del Mar Race Program, and Free “Horse Box drawing” tickets for an opportunity to win prizes after each horse race. Festivities begin at 12:30. August 12 (Wednesday) Opening Night of Phantom @ The Moonlight Amphitheatre
Tony Award-winning authors, Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston of Broadway's Titantic and Grand Hotel, have fashioned a sensational new look at this mysterious young Phantom, who lives in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and shares glorious music with the enchanting vocal prodigy, Christine. September 14 (Monday) Seascape. Directed by the Moonlight Stage Production’s Artistic Director, Kathy Brombacher. This mind blowing playwright is full of comedy, fantasy, satire surrounding couples’ relationships and so much more. Vista’s very own Moonlight Cultural Foundation is hosting this, along with a series of free play readings at the Avo Playhouse on 303 Main St. Vista. CA 92084. September 26 (Saturday) The San Diego County Bar Association is hosting an Ask-A-Lawyer event on Saturday September 26th from 10-4p.m at the Village Walk at Eastlake. Admission is free and this event is open to the public. If you have questions or need guidance in issues such as family law, immigration, bankruptcy, foreclosure, or employment issues, let the experts give you the answers. Ask-A-Lawyer program is all a part of Lawyers Giving Back, a year long campaign brought to you by the SDCBA that is all about Laywers giving back to the San Diego Community in 2009. November 16 (Monday) An Evening With Jonathan McMurtry’s Shakespeare. The nationally recognized and award winning Jonathan McMurtry will guide you through an unforgettable evening or Bard’s most memorable monologues. Vista’s very own Moonlight Cultural Foundation is hosting this, along with a series of free play readings at the Avo Playhouse on 303 Main St. Vista. CA 92084. November 7 (Friday) The Vista Art Foundation will hold a public reception, open to all, at the new art gallery located at 205 Main Street in historic downtown Vista beginning at 5:30 p.m. for Sheldon Lenkowski.  Sheldon started out as a New York based Graphic Designer and had many national and international clients.  He relocated to Vista in 2001, and expanded his talent to creating children’s art using felt fabric.  His latest foray is Scratch Art, a form of etching.  Sheldon is available for interviews and sample image files; he may be reached at (760) 295-3307.

VISTA CITY COUNCIL meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 600 Eucalyptus Avenue, Vista. GREATER VISTA FIRE SAFE COUNCIL meets on the third Monday of every month at the Vista Public Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave., from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. The Council's mission is "To mobilize the community to preserve, educate and protect lives, property and the environment from multi-hazard incidents." The Fire Safe Council can be used as a forum to share information, solve problems and link related programs to save money and time. The public safety issues the council discusses may extend beyond fire safety to earthquake preparedness, emergency medical response.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program Offered to Local Residents The North County Humane Society & SPCA (NCHS) will now offer low-cost spay/neuter vouchers to all Oceanside and Vista Residents. The voucher is part of NCHS’ Project KEPPT (Keeping Every Person and Pet Together) program. Project KEPPT is designed to help people who are faced with a crisis and must make the decision whether or not to keep their pet. Pet owners can purchase the vouchers at NCHS, located at 2905 San Luis Rey Road in Oceanside, any day of the week from 10am to 5pm. The cost per dog varies by weight and sex; fees start at $65 to $105. The spay/neuter costs for cats are females $50 and males $60. Project KEPPT also offers low-cost vaccinations, a pet food bank, help with behavioral issues and access to many other resources. Residents can apply to receive the full benefits of the Project KEPPT program by visiting www.nchumane.org or during Project KEPPT day, the first Sunday of every month from 1pm to 3pm.
